Emmanuela Kovacs, Vasil Kolev-Vassillo, Veselin Damyanov-Ves, Branko Nikolov and Lyudmil Georgiev

Emanuela Kovach, Vasil Kolev-Vassillo, Veselin Damyanov-Ves, Branko Nikolov and Ludmil Georgiev are representatives of different generations of printmakers, but nevertheless each of them already has its established place on the art scene. The exhibition “Asylums”, which includes works by the five authors, unites their disparate plastic pursuits. Behind this wealth of possibilities of graphic art, however, there is also something common, albeit abstract, which the present exhibition tries to bring out – their thematic focus on the problem of asylum.

In the modern global world, marked by emigrant waves, ethnic tensions, ecological catastrophes, the topic of refuge, as a shelter, a roof, a shelter, a nest, a haunt, is becoming more and more relevant. Refugee camps, disaster shelters, homeless shelters, even public, cultural and playhouses are topics of constant debate in the general social space. The shelter is increasingly becoming the only home. It is precisely the projections of this social phenomenon that can be seen in the works of the five authors presented in the “Asylums” exhibition. Everyone in their own way, consciously or not, reflects the theme with their handwriting.

Emanuela Kovach searches for the home within herself, Vasil Kolev-Vassillo materializes it in different architectural silhouettes. Ludmil Georgiev materializes his idea of refuge, withdrawing from the objective world, in search of memory, vision and dream as possible refuges. The works presented by Branko Nikolov appear as a counterpoint to this approach. In them, the archetypal images of the nest, of the misty forest, of the deserted old house can be interpreted as a home. In the creative endeavors of Veselin Damyanov-Ves, we find that refuge is where we ourselves are. This is not a specific space, but a way of perceiving the surrounding reality.

All these diverse thematic directions and plastic approaches shown in the exhibition “Asylums” are united by a choice common to the five authors – they chose the art of graphics as their creative refuge.
